Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Substation Electrical Engineer to guide the design and delivery of complex electrical infrastructure projects ranging from 13kV through 765kV. This is an excellent opportunity for an accomplished substation engineer who enjoys leading technical teams, managing projects from concept through construction, collaborating directly with utility clients, and influencing the future of the electrical grid.
What You’ll Do:
- Lead high-voltage substation projects from initial concept through final completion.
- Develop and review complete substation design packages for new installations, upgrades, and modifications.
- Oversee physical layouts, below-grade design, grounding, lightning protection, lighting, security, protective relaying, and control systems.
- Prepare and review engineering calculations for AC and DC station service, battery sizing, voltage drop, cable sizing, conduit fill, and insulation requirements.
- Produce equipment specifications, bills of materials, cost estimates, design sketches, and construction-ready deliverables.
- Apply IEEE, NESC, utility, and industry standards throughout project execution.
- Conduct field inspections and assess existing substation facilities.
- Manage technical deliverables, project schedules, budgets, and design deadlines.
- Lead design quality reviews and ensure compliance with internal QA/QC requirements.
- Resolve complex technical and project-related challenges.
- Partner with clients, contractors, vendors, and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Support proposal development, including scope, schedule, staffing, and budget estimates.
- Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership across project teams.
What You’ll Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline from an ABET-accredited program.
- At least 7 years of substation engineering, power delivery, or closely related project experience.
- Candidates with an engineering technology degree must have successfully completed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.
- Strong knowledge of high-voltage substation design, calculations, equipment, and construction documentation.
- Working knowledge of IEEE, NESC, utility specifications, and applicable industry standards.
- Demonstrated experience leading projects, reviewing technical work, and coordinating project deliverables.
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and relevant engineering or design software.
- Willingness to travel approximately 25%.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional Engineer license.
- Engineering consulting experience.
- Experience supporting utility clients and developing client relationships.
- Proposal development, estimating, budgeting, or project financial management experience.
- Experience mentoring junior engineers or leading multidisciplinary design teams.
